The Italian Lakes offer something genuinely rare: postcard scenery paired with climbing serious enough to have shaped one of cycling's five Monuments, Il Lombardia. Lake Como and Lake Garda each have their own distinct cycling character.
Como's fame rests largely on the climbs around Bellagio and the eastern shore: the Madonna del Ghisallo, home to a chapel and museum dedicated to cycling itself, and the infamous Muro di Sormano, a wall averaging 17% with sections touching 25–27%.
Garda offers a different kind of variety within a single base: flat lakeside cruising in the morning, vineyard roads through Valtenesi by lunch, and a genuine mountain test on Monte Baldo by afternoon.
Signature Routes
Muro di Sormano
One of the most severe short climbs in European road racing, featured repeatedly in Il Lombardia.
Madonna del Ghisallo
A steady, historic climb to the sanctuary and museum dedicated to cycling's entire history.
Colma di Sormano
A longer, steadier alternative to the Muro, climbing to an old astronomical observation deck.
Monte Baldo
One of the most challenging and spectacular rides on Lake Garda, climbing from lake level into alpine terrain.
Where to Stay
Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio are the three classic Como bases. On Garda, Malcesine gives direct access to Monte Baldo, while Riva del Garda suits riders prioritising the Ponale Road.
Coffee & Culture
The Museo del Ciclismo at the Madonna del Ghisallo sanctuary is as close as cycling gets to a pilgrimage site — a small chapel packed with donated jerseys, bikes and memorabilia from across the sport's history.
Best Time to Go
April through June and September through October give the best combination of comfortable climbing temperatures and manageable tourist traffic.
Practical Tips
- Milan's airports offer the widest connections for Como; Verona and Bergamo both serve Garda well.
- The Muro di Sormano is short but genuinely brutal — there's no shame in taking the Colma di Sormano bypass instead.
- Como's roads are frequently narrow with car and tour-bus traffic around the lakeside towns.
- If combining Como and Garda, Lake Iseo makes a worthwhile stop in between.
