Madonna del Ghisallo is short enough to look manageable and steep enough to demand respect. From Bellagio via Civenna, the climb rises for around four kilometres at an average of about nine percent. That means there is very little time to hide. You are climbing properly almost from the start.
The reason this climb matters goes beyond the gradient. Ghisallo is part of the emotional landscape of Italian cycling, closely tied to the roads of Il Lombardia and the culture of Lake Como riding. It has the feeling of a pilgrimage, but do not let that soften the physical reality. This is still a hard road.
How to Ride It
- Start calmly from Bellagio. The climb is not long, but the gradient is serious enough to punish a rushed opening.
- Keep your cadence alive through the steep parts. Once you start grinding too early, the climb feels much longer.
- Take time at the top. This is one of the few climbs where the summit itself is part of the experience.
Where to Stay
Bellagio is the most natural base. It gives direct access to Madonna del Ghisallo, nearby Lake Como roads and the option to link the climb with Muro di Sormano or Colma di Sormano for a much harder day.
Practical Tips
- Milan airports are the most practical international arrival points for Lake Como.
- The climb can be busy in high season. Ride early for quieter roads.
- Do not treat the short distance as easy. Four kilometres at this gradient is still a proper effort.
