Muro di Sormano

The Muro di Sormano is short, absurdly steep and almost rude in how quickly it becomes difficult. This is one of the most infamous walls in Italian cycling.

The Muro di Sormano does not need distance to make its point. At an average gradient of 17 percent, with maximum ramps reaching 25 to 27 percent, it is a climb where the numbers are already dramatic enough. There is no need to dress it up.

What makes the Muro special is the intensity. It is not a long mountain effort where you slowly find your place. It is immediate, awkward and brutally steep. Every choice matters. Gearing, line, balance and pacing all become part of the same problem: how to keep moving when the road clearly has other ideas.

How to Ride It

  • Use your easiest gear from the start. Waiting until you are already in trouble is too late.
  • Stay seated when traction matters, but be ready to shift your weight carefully on the steepest ramps.
  • Forget style. The goal is to keep the bike moving, not to look smooth for a camera.

Where to Stay

Bellagio, Como or the villages around Lake Como all work as bases, depending on the wider trip. Bellagio is especially appealing if you want to combine the Muro with Madonna del Ghisallo and other classic roads from the Lombardia cycling landscape.

Practical Tips

  • Milan airports are the most practical international arrival points for Lake Como.
  • The climb is extremely steep, so check your gearing before the trip rather than discovering the problem at the bottom.
  • Descend with care if your route brings you back down steep local roads. The gradients are not only hard uphill.
