Shape your ride days
A practical starting point
- Day 1Sardinia Coast and Hills Weekend →
100 to 190 km over two rides · 1,600 to 3,800 m over two rides · Challenging
Use this challenging ride to learn the roads and check the group's legs.
- Day 2Sardinia Coastal Ride →
45 to 90 km · 600 to 1,600 m · Challenging
Make this the main ride day, with enough time for stops and changing conditions.

Keep the final choice flexible and shorten the ride if travel or recovery requires it.

Sardinia doesn't have a single famous climb or a race that's turned it into a household cycling name, and that's precisely its appeal. This is an island for riders who want spectacular, near-empty roads without the crowds that come with Mallorca or the Dolomites.
The island's cycling geography splits into distinct zones. The western coastal road between Alghero and Bosa is considered one of the finest stretches of road cycling in Italy. Inland, the Gennargentu and Barbagia mountains offer long, steady climbing through cork and holm oak forest.
Sardinia rewards a point-to-point or multi-base approach rather than a single fixed hotel — the coast-to-mountain contrast is much of the point.
Signature Routes
Alghero–Bosa Coastal Road
Widely considered one of the best road cycling stretches in Italy, hugging dramatic coastline.
Gennargentu Interior
The heart of Sardinia's mountain riding, through remote granite plateaus and forest roads.
Talana Climb
Rated by several Sardinia-based tour operators as the island's single best climb.
Monte Limbara
A well-known northern Sardinia climb through pristine forest to massive granite rock formations.
Where to Stay
Alghero or Bosa suit the western coastal riding; Fonni or Villagrande Strisaili put you in the heart of the Gennargentu for mountain days; Cagliari and Olbia are the natural start and end points for a coast-to-coast route.
Coffee & Culture
Sardinian food culture is distinctive even by Italian standards — pane carasau (crisp flatbread), pecorino cheese and Cannonau wine are the staples worth seeking out after a long ride.
Best Time to Go
April through June and September through November give the most comfortable riding temperatures. Winters are mild enough for year-round coastal riding for experienced cyclists.
Practical Tips
- Cagliari and Olbia airports offer the widest connections; Alghero is a good option for the northwest coast.
- Ferries from Genoa or Pisa are a common way to bring your own bike.
- A car is genuinely useful for exploring multiple regions of the island in one trip.
- Gaps between towns in the mountainous interior can be long with limited services.
