The coast sells Sardinia, but the inland roads often make the better cycling. Once you move away from the busiest beach areas, the island becomes quieter, hillier and more interesting from a route planning perspective.

This ride idea is for cyclists who want to add depth to a Sardinia trip. Start from the coast and climb inland, or base yourself in a town like Nuoro if you want a more interior focused ride. The key is to use villages as anchors, because the roads between them can feel remote.

How to Build This Ride

  • Start from a coast town or inland base.
  • Build towards smaller villages rather than only following the biggest roads.
  • Add rolling climbs and inland valleys.
  • Plan water and food stops carefully.
  • Return by a route that avoids exposed main roads where possible.

Climbs Included

  • Specific linked climb pages can be added later once the Sardinia climb cluster is developed.

Villages & Coffee Stops

  • Nuoro works well for a more inland cycling base. Alghero and Cagliari are better if you want a trip that mixes coast and hills. Smaller villages are part of the charm, but you should not rely on them without checking services.

Make it shorter

Use one inland village as the turning point and return to your base.

Make it harder

Add a larger interior loop with more climbing, but watch heat, wind and water availability.

Local Notes

The inland roads can be quiet in a good way and quiet in a risky way. Carry more food and water than you would on a busier European cycling route.

This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
