The Basque Country punches enormously above its weight in professional cycling, and the region's obsession with the sport shows the moment you start riding here. This is home turf for the Clásica San Sebastián and a string of steep, punchy climbs that regularly appear in the Vuelta a España and Itzulia Basque Country.
The riding style here is distinctive: short, steep, often irregular climbs rather than long Alpine grinds, packed densely into green, rolling countryside between the Cantabrian coast and the western Pyrenees. San Sebastián is the obvious hub, with the coastal Jaizkibel climb its signature ride.
There's also a French Basque Country across the border, centred on Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Biarritz — smaller, quieter and arguably underrated.

Alto de Jaizkibel
The region's best-known climb among visiting cyclists, a coastal ridge with sweeping views over the Bay of Biscay.
Alto de Arrate (Alto Ixua)
The most recognisable inland climb, a repeated Vuelta stage finish won by Induráin, Contador and Quintana.
Andazarrate
A tough, erratic climb in the heart of Basque cycling country, popular with local club group rides.

Routes combining flat coastal cycle paths with sharp climbs up mountains like Igeldo and Ulia.
Where to Stay
San Sebastián is the natural base for most visiting cyclists — well connected, close to Jaizkibel, and with an excellent food scene. For a quieter feel, the inland towns around Durango and Eibar put you closer to the region's toughest climbs.
Coffee & Culture
San Sebastián alone holds an outsized number of Michelin stars for its size, and the local pintxos bar culture is an essential part of any rest day here. The Basque language, unrelated to Spanish or French, gives the region a distinct identity that extends to its cycling culture.
Best Time to Go
April through October gives the most reliable conditions. The Clásica San Sebastián runs annually in late July or early August, a good time to combine a visit with watching a Monument-level race up close.
Practical Tips
- Bilbao and San Sebastián airports both serve the region well; Bilbao has more international connections.
- The heart of local Basque cycling culture is inland, around Durango, Eibar, Zumarraga and Arrasate.
- Basque roads reward riders who don't mind irregular, punchy gradients — pace conservatively until you've got a feel for a given ascent.
- The French Basque Country side, around Saint-Jean-de-Luz, is quieter with similarly rewarding riding.
