Jaizkibel is the obvious first climb for a cycling trip to San Sebastián. It is close enough to the city to fit into a half day ride, but long enough to feel like a proper Basque climb. The gradient is steady, the coast is nearby and the weather can change the mood quickly.
This route works best as a coastal loop. Start in San Sebastián, ride east towards the Jaizkibel area, choose the side that fits your plan and return through roads that keep the ride scenic without adding unnecessary traffic.

- Ride east towards Lezo or Hondarribia.
- Climb Alto de Jaizkibel from your chosen side.
- Use the coast and smaller roads to shape the return.
- Finish back in San Sebastián.

- San Sebastián is the obvious start and finish. Hondarribia is a strong coffee or lunch anchor if your route reaches the coast. Lezo works as a practical point for the climb.
Make it shorter
Ride out to Jaizkibel and return directly to San Sebastián.
Make it harder
Add Monte Igeldo at the end for a sharper city side finish.
Local Notes
Jaizkibel is not brutally steep, but the Basque roads around it can make the ride feel constantly active. Watch for damp roads and shaded descents, even when the weather looks fine in town.
