The Basque Country is not only about one famous climb. Its real character sits in repeated efforts, green roads, damp corners, punchy ramps and climbs that keep changing shape. This route idea uses Arrate, Andazarrate and Monte Igeldo as possible anchors.
You do not need all three in one ride. The smarter approach is to pick a base and build a route that feels coherent. From San Sebastián, Monte Igeldo and Andazarrate make sense. From Eibar, Arrate becomes the obvious focus. Trying to force every climb into one GPX can make the ride worse.
How to Build This Ride
- Choose San Sebastián or Eibar as your base.
- Pick two main climbs rather than collecting everything.
- Use smaller roads between towns where possible.
- Add Monte Igeldo if you want a city side finish.
- Keep the route flowing rather than chasing random ramps.
Climbs Included
Villages & Coffee Stops
- San Sebastián is best for travel atmosphere. Eibar is more direct for Arrate. Asteasu is useful if Andazarrate is part of the route. Coffee stops are easiest in the larger towns, so plan before heading into smaller roads.

Choose one climb and build a compact loop around it.
Make it harder
Combine Jaizkibel, Monte Igeldo and Andazarrate from San Sebastián for a demanding coastal and inland day.
Local Notes
Basque roads can be shaded and damp. Descents need attention, especially when leaves, rain or farm traffic are involved. The climbs are not always long, but the route can still feel heavy.
