Liège Bastogne Liège Inspired Ride
A full Ardennes route idea inspired by the climbs and rhythm of Liège Bastogne Liège. Not the race route, but the kind of day that explains why this classic is so hard.
- Distance
- 110 to 170 km

- Road
- Start
- Liège, Spa or Stavelot
- Best Season
- April to October
This is not meant to copy Liège Bastogne Liège metre by metre. That would be unnecessary and, for most riders, not very useful. The smarter version is to build a ride that captures the logic of the race: repeated climbs, heavy roads, no long flat recovery and a final section that keeps asking for effort.
Use the famous names as anchors. Stockeu, La Redoute, Roche aux Faucons, Col du Rosier and Haute Levée can all shape the route, depending on where you start. The goal is not to collect every climb. The goal is to create a day that feels like the Ardennes.
How to Build This Ride
- Choose Liège, Spa or Stavelot as your base.
- Pick three to five major climbs from the region.
- Use safe, logical connectors instead of chasing every ramp.
- Keep the hardest climbs for the second half if you want a classics feeling.
- Finish somewhere with food, recovery and simple logistics.
Climbs Included
Villages & Coffee Stops
- Liège gives the strongest race connection and easiest logistics. Spa and Stavelot feel better as cycling bases if you want to be closer to the climbs. For a long route, plan stops in advance rather than assuming you will find something when you need it.
Make it shorter
Build a 70 to 100 km version with La Redoute and Roche aux Faucons as the main climbs.
Make it harder
Add Stockeu, Wanne and Rosier into one larger route, but be realistic. The Ardennes can turn heroic planning into bad riding very quickly.
Local Notes
The main mistake is trying to include too much. A good Ardennes route should flow. If the GPX becomes a jagged mess of out and backs, strip it back and choose the best climbs rather than the most climbs.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
