Côte de Stockeu is the kind of climb where the average gradient already tells you most of what you need to know. Depending on the exact segment used, it sits between 9.4 and 12.5 percent, with a maximum around 15 percent. That is not a gentle Ardennes rise. That is a proper wall.

Its role in Liège Bastogne Liège gives the climb extra weight, but riders do not need race history to understand it. Stockeu is hard because it is direct. The road rises sharply, asks for low gears and gives very little time to settle. It is over quickly, but only if you ride it well.

How to Ride It

  • Shift before the steepest part. Once the gradient bites, smooth gear changes become harder.
  • Keep the effort controlled from the bottom. Short does not mean easy.
  • Stay compact and steady. On a climb like Stockeu, wasted movement becomes wasted energy.

Where to Stay

Stavelot is a logical base for riding Stockeu and the surrounding Liège Bastogne Liège roads. It keeps you close to several classic Ardennes climbs without making the day overly complicated.

Practical Tips

  • Liège is the nearest major city and a useful reference point for travel planning.
  • Roads in the Ardennes can feel heavy after rain, especially on shaded sections.
  • Combine Stockeu carefully with other climbs. The individual efforts are short, but the accumulated damage is real.
