Côte de la Roche aux Faucons has all the qualities that make Ardennes climbs so difficult. It is not long enough to become a mountain, but it is steep enough to demand proper respect. With gradients averaging between 9.5 and 11 percent and a maximum around 16 percent, it quickly becomes uncomfortable.
Its character is especially powerful in a longer ride. On fresh legs, it is a hard climb. After several Ardennes climbs, it becomes a test of pacing, patience and pride. That is why it belongs on any serious Liège Bastogne Liège inspired route.
How to Ride It
- Arrive with some energy saved. Roche aux Faucons is much harder when it comes late in the day.
- Stay seated where possible. Smooth pressure helps you keep traction and rhythm.
- Do not chase the top too early. The final part still needs proper effort.
Where to Stay
Liège is the practical base for riders who want to explore the full classics landscape. For a quieter stay, smaller towns south of the city can put you closer to the climbs.
Practical Tips
- Plan the full route before you ride. The Ardennes are dense with climbs, and distance alone does not tell the whole story.
- Bring enough food. Repeated steep efforts can empty the legs faster than expected.
- Check weather conditions. Wet roads make steep Ardennes descents and corners more demanding.
