Alto de Hazallanas is short compared with Pico Veleta, but much more violent. From Güéjar Sierra, it delivers steep gradients, sharp ramps and a very different kind of Andalusian suffering.

Alto de Hazallanas is a climb where the statistics are already enough to make the point. Around seven kilometres at close to ten percent average is severe. Add ramps reaching 20 to 22 percent, and the climb becomes one of the most demanding efforts in Andalusia.
This is not a long, patient altitude climb like Pico Veleta. Hazallanas is more immediate. It asks for low gears, controlled breathing and a willingness to accept that speed will not always look flattering. The road is hard from the moment it decides to be hard.
How to Ride It
- Start with your easiest climbing rhythm. The average gradient is too steep for heroic pacing.
- Prepare for the maximum ramps. Sections above twenty percent need balance as much as power.
- Keep your upper body calm. On steep roads, tension wastes energy fast.
Where to Stay
Granada is again the most useful base. It gives access to both Hazallanas and Pico Veleta, making it ideal for riders who want a serious Andalusian climbing trip.
Practical Tips
- Málaga and Granada are the main travel options to consider.
- Avoid the hottest part of the day. Steep gradients and Andalusian heat are a bad combination.
- Check your gearing before the trip. This climb exposes overconfident setups immediately.
