This is not the route to choose because it looks impressive on a website. It is the route to choose if you are genuinely ready for a huge climbing day. Pico Veleta gives the ride altitude and scale. Hazallanas gives it steepness and aggression.

For most riders, these are better as two separate days. But as a route idea, the combination explains what makes Granada such a powerful cycling base. Within one region, you can build both long altitude climbs and brutally steep tests.

How to Build This Ride

  • Start early in Granada.
  • Decide whether Pico Veleta or Hazallanas is the main objective.
  • Do not attempt the full high road unless weather and legs are right.
  • Use Güéjar Sierra as a logical anchor if Hazallanas is included.
  • Return to Granada with enough time and daylight.

Villages & Coffee Stops

  • Granada is the base. Güéjar Sierra is the key route anchor. Once you commit to the higher Sierra Nevada roads, stops become less predictable, so carry more than you think you need.

Make it shorter

Split the route into two rides: Pico Veleta one day, Hazallanas another day.

Make it harder

You do not need to. If the route feels too easy on paper, you are probably reading the paper wrong.

Local Notes

Altitude, heat and steep gradients are a dangerous combination if you treat them casually. This route needs honest planning, early start times and a realistic escape plan.
