Pas de Peyrol is the climb that gives the Massif Central its sharp cycling edge. The landscape feels different from the Alps and Pyrenees. More rugged, more open in places and less polished as a cycling tourism machine.
This route idea works well from Mandailles if you want the climb close, or from Aurillac if you want a larger ride with more services. The climb itself is short compared with the high mountains, but steep enough to define the day.
How to Build This Ride
- Start in Mandailles, Aurillac or a nearby Cantal town.
- Build towards Pas de Peyrol from the Mandailles side.
- Use the Puy Mary area as the main scenic objective.
- Add rolling Cantal roads if you want a longer route.
- Return by a safe valley road.
Climbs Included
Villages & Coffee Stops
- Aurillac gives better logistics. Mandailles gives the climb a cleaner focus. Smaller villages in the Cantal can be excellent stops, but services may be seasonal or limited.
Make it shorter
Start near Mandailles and ride Pas de Peyrol as the main climb.
Make it harder
Build a larger loop through the Cantal, but keep an eye on total elevation. The roads are rarely as easy as they look.
Local Notes
The Massif Central can feel remote quickly. Carry food, check weather and do not assume every village has an open café.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
