Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg Loop

A compact Flanders ride built around two of the region’s defining climbs. Short on paper, heavy enough on the road.

Distance
40 to 70 km
Elevation Gain
600 to 1,100 m
Ride Time
2.5 to 4.5 hours
Difficulty
Challenging
Surface
Road and cobbles
Start
Oudenaarde or Kluisbergen
Best Season
March to October

Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg are one of the most logical pairs in Flanders. Kwaremont is longer and more about rhythm over cobbles. Paterberg is short, steep and blunt. Together they give you a strong classics experience without needing to build a massive day.

This route idea works especially well for a first visit. Start in Oudenaarde, ride towards Kluisbergen, take on the Kwaremont, then add the Paterberg as the sharper second hit. From there you can either return directly or add extra smaller climbs depending on time and legs.

How to Build This Ride

  • Start in Oudenaarde or Kluisbergen.
  • Ride Oude Kwaremont as the longer cobbled climb.
  • Link towards the Paterberg.
  • Add extra local roads around the Flemish Ardennes if you want more distance.
  • Return to Oudenaarde for a simple finish.

Villages & Coffee Stops

  • Oudenaarde is the easiest place to start and finish. Kluisbergen is useful if you want to stay closer to the climbs. The cafés around the classics roads are part of the experience, but always check opening times outside peak season.

Make it shorter

Start near Kluisbergen and ride only the two climbs with a small loop around them.

Make it harder

Add Koppenberg after the Paterberg, but only if you are comfortable with steep cobbles.

Local Notes

This route is ideal for learning the difference between a climb profile and a Flemish climb. Four percent on cobbles is not the same as four percent on smooth tarmac.

This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
