Oude Kwaremont is a climb that does its damage through duration and surface rather than pure gradient. Four percent would look gentle on a smooth Alpine road. On cobbles, in Flanders, with the road dragging on longer than expected, it becomes a very different kind of effort.
This is one of the defining roads of the Flemish classics. The climb has space, exposure and rhythm, which means strong riders can carry speed, but only if they stay relaxed over the stones. Fight the bike too much and the Kwaremont will take more from you than the profile suggests.
How to Ride It
- Do not judge the climb by the average gradient. The cobbles make every metre more expensive.
- Stay seated where possible and keep pressure smooth through the pedals. Spiky efforts waste energy fast on this surface.
- Choose your line early. The best path over Flemish cobbles is rarely found by looking only one metre ahead.
Where to Stay
Oudenaarde is the best base for riding Oude Kwaremont and the surrounding Flemish climbs. It puts you close to the classics roads, cycling cafés and the broader Ronde van Vlaanderen experience.
Practical Tips
- Brussels and Lille are practical arrival points, depending on your wider trip.
- The roads can be busy with cyclists, especially around spring classics season.
- Tyre pressure matters. Too hard and the cobbles punish you. Too soft and you risk trouble. Find the middle ground before the ride.
