Cantal Big Day Ride

A longer Massif Central ride through the Cantal, built around Pas de Peyrol, volcanic roads and the kind of terrain that quietly wears you down.

Start

Best Season
May to October

The Cantal is perfect for riders who want a big day without the obvious Alpine script. The roads roll, rise, drop and rise again. Pas de Peyrol can be the main climb, but the real character comes from how the terrain keeps working between the named sections.

This is a route idea for experienced riders. Not because one climb is impossible, but because the day can become long, remote and hard to fuel properly. Build it carefully and leave room for weather, tired legs and limited services.

How to Build This Ride

  • Start in Aurillac, Mandailles or Murat.
  • Use Pas de Peyrol as the main named climb.
  • Add surrounding Cantal roads to build the full day.
  • Plan food and water stops before remote sections.
  • Keep an escape option if weather changes.

Villages & Coffee Stops

  • Aurillac is the strongest base for logistics. Mandailles puts you close to Pas de Peyrol. Murat can work well for a more mountain focused trip.

Make it shorter

Ride Pas de Peyrol as a focused loop and skip the larger Cantal extension.

Make it harder

Add more surrounding climbs and volcanic roads, but only after checking services and weather.

Local Notes

This is not a place to rely on vibes and one gel. The route can become remote, and the weather can change the feeling of the day quickly.

This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
