Rocacorba has become one of the benchmark climbs for riders based in Girona. It is close enough to be part of a regular training loop, but hard enough to feel like an event every time. The numbers already suggest a serious climb, and the steeper ramps above ten percent give it an edge that many Girona roads do not have.
The climb’s appeal is its simplicity. There is no grand Alpine theatre and no famous race finish needed to justify the effort. It is just a proper road, a proper gradient and a proper test. For riders who want to understand why Girona became a cycling base rather than just a pretty town with cafés, Rocacorba is part of the answer.
How to Ride It
- Do not let the early slopes trick you into riding above threshold. The hardest sections come later.
- Shift before the steeper ramps. Once the gradient bites above ten percent, smooth gear changes matter.
- Keep something for the final kilometres. Rocacorba has a way of turning a controlled effort into survival if you start celebrating too early.
Where to Stay
Girona is the obvious base. You get the full cycling city experience, with cafés, workshops, rental options and a wide choice of routes in every direction. Banyoles also works well if you want to stay closer to the climb itself.
Practical Tips
- Girona is easiest to reach through Girona Costa Brava Airport or Barcelona, depending on flight options.
- The climb is quieter than the roads immediately around Girona, but it is still popular with cyclists. Expect company on good riding days.
- Carry water from Girona or Banyoles. Do not assume you can fix poor preparation halfway up.
