Monte Sante Marie is not a climb in the classic sense. It is a gravel sector that changes the whole character of a ride. The surface, the exposure, the rolling gradients and the Strade Bianche atmosphere make it one of the most important route anchors in Tuscany.

A good ride here should not just chase distance. It should connect white roads, village stops and enough tarmac to keep the day flowing. Start in Siena or Asciano, build around Monte Sante Marie and give yourself time to enjoy the landscape rather than treating it like a race simulation.

How to Build This Ride

  • Start in Siena, Asciano or a nearby village.
  • Use Monte Sante Marie as the key gravel sector.
  • Connect white roads with sensible tarmac sections.
  • Add village stops before the ride becomes too remote.
  • Return to Siena or your chosen base.

Climbs Included

Villages & Coffee Stops

  • Siena is the most obvious base. Asciano is a strong anchor if you want to sit closer to the Strade Bianche landscape. Smaller villages can make beautiful stops, but opening times are not always built around hungry cyclists.

Make it shorter

Start near Asciano and build a compact route around Monte Sante Marie only.

Make it harder

Add more Strade Bianche sectors such as Ponte del Garbo or the roads towards Siena. The difficulty rises quickly on gravel.

Local Notes

Tyres matter. Do not ride this like a normal road loop unless conditions are perfect and you know what you are doing. Dry dust and wet mud create completely different rides.
