Pico Veleta from Granada Ride

A massive Sierra Nevada ride from Granada towards Pico Veleta. Long, high and one of the most serious road cycling climbs in Europe.

Distance
80 to 110 km
Elevation Gain
2,600 to 3,300 m
Ride Time
6 to 9 hours
Difficulty
Hors Catégorie
Surface
Road, with rough upper sections
Start
Granada
Best Season
June to September

Pico Veleta is not a normal climb. From Granada, the road rises for around forty kilometres and takes you into thin air, changing temperatures and rougher surfaces near the top. The scale alone makes this a ride to plan seriously.

The route idea is simple because the climb is already enormous. Start in Granada, climb steadily into the Sierra Nevada and make the high road the centre of the day. Do not add unnecessary extras. This ride is already big enough.

How to Build This Ride

  • Start early in Granada.
  • Ride towards the Sierra Nevada road.
  • Climb Pico Veleta at conservative intensity.
  • Treat the upper rougher section as part of the challenge.
  • Descend with warm kit and full concentration.

Villages & Coffee Stops

  • Granada is the natural start and finish. Once you climb higher, services become more limited and more seasonal. Plan food and water before you leave the city.

Make it shorter

Ride part of the climb and turn back before the highest rougher sections.

Make it harder

There is no need. The full climb already has enough distance, altitude and elevation gain.

Local Notes

Heat low down and cold high up can both be part of the same ride. Start early, carry layers and do not underestimate the descent after such a long effort.

This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
