Passo Fedaia and Malga Ciapela Ride
A Dolomites route idea built around Passo Fedaia and the brutal Malga Ciapela section. The average gradient looks friendly. The road is not.

- 1,600 to 2,800 m
- Ride Time

- Canazei, Arabba or nearby Dolomites villages
- Best Season
- June to September
Passo Fedaia is exactly why route pages need more than a facts panel. The average gradient can look modest, but the Malga Ciapela section is the part riders remember. It is steep, sustained and capable of changing the whole ride.
This route works best as a focused Dolomites day. Start from Canazei, Arabba or a nearby village, build towards Fedaia and make sure you know which side you are riding. The climb can be part of a bigger loop, but the hard section deserves respect before you start adding extra passes.
How to Build This Ride
- Choose your base around Canazei or Arabba.
- Plan which side of Passo Fedaia you want to ride.
- Build the route so the Malga Ciapela section does not arrive after too much unnecessary fatigue.
- Use the lake and summit area as the main stop.
- Descend carefully and return by a logical loop or out and back.
Climbs Included
Villages & Coffee Stops
- Canazei is the strongest practical base. Arabba also works if you are building a bigger Dolomites loop. Around Fedaia, do not rely only on finding a perfect café exactly when you need it. Carry food.
Make it shorter
Ride Fedaia as an out and back from a nearby base.
Make it harder
Add Pordoi or Sella Ronda sections, but only if you want a very demanding route.
Local Notes
The hard part of Fedaia is not a detail. Build your day around it. If your GPX makes it look like just one more road section, your legs will disagree.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
