Orcières Merlette is a good route idea for riders who want an Alpine climb without building the day around one of the huge legendary passes. The climb is long enough to feel like a proper summit finish, but still manageable compared with Galibier, Croix de Fer or Alpe d’Huez.
The route works best when you use a valley town as your base and make the resort climb the clear objective. It is especially useful on a trip where you want one controlled mountain day between heavier efforts.
How to Build This Ride
- Start from Gap or a closer valley town.
- Ride towards the Drac valley.
- Climb Orcières Merlette as the main effort.
- Stop at the resort if you need food or water.
- Descend carefully and return to your base.

Villages & Coffee Stops
- Gap gives the easiest logistics. Saint Bonnet en Champsaur and nearby valley towns make the day feel more local and reduce transfer riding.
Make it shorter
Start closer to the base of the climb and keep the ride focused on the ascent and descent.
Make it harder
Add extra valley kilometres before the climb or link it into a larger Alpine loop.
Local Notes
This is a good confidence climb. It feels like the Alps, but it does not require the same commitment as the massive high passes. That makes it useful for mixed ability trips.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
