Grand Colombier Two Sides Weekend
A Jura weekend idea built around riding Grand Colombier from two different sides, with enough space between efforts to actually enjoy the region.
- Distance
- 90 to 160 km over two rides
- Elevation Gain
- 2,500 to 4,000 m over two rides
- Ride Time
- 6 to 11 hours total
- Difficulty
- Hors Catégorie
- Surface
- Road
- Start
- Culoz, Artemare or Belley
- Best Season
- May to October
Grand Colombier is not a climb you need to rush through once and forget. The Culoz and Artemare sides give different versions of the same mountain, and together they make a strong weekend structure.
The smartest way to do this is over two rides. Day one can focus on the classic Culoz side. Day two can use Artemare as the main climb, with a shorter loop around it. That gives the trip a clear purpose without forcing one oversized route.
How to Build This Ride
- Base yourself in Culoz, Artemare or Belley.
- Ride Grand Colombier from Culoz on the first day.
- Keep the second day shorter and focus on the Artemare side.
- Use valley roads and local towns for recovery between rides.
- Avoid turning both days into full gas tests.
Climbs Included
Villages & Coffee Stops
- Culoz and Artemare are practical climb anchors. Belley is useful if you want more accommodation and food options. The best weekend version uses the towns as simple logistics, not as complicated transfer points.
Make it shorter
Ride only the Culoz side and keep the second day as an easy recovery spin.
Make it harder
Add extra Jura roads around both climbs, but do not underestimate how much fatigue two Grand Colombier rides create.
Local Notes
This is a better weekend idea than a one day challenge for most riders. Riding both sides too aggressively in one day can turn a beautiful trip into admin with sore legs.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
