Grand Colombier is the Jura climb that feels closest to the great Tour de France mountains. From Culoz, it is long, scenic and demanding enough to structure an entire day. The gradients vary, and that makes pacing more important than the headline numbers suggest.
The most direct version starts in Culoz and focuses on the climb. A bigger version starts from Belley or links extra roads around the Jura foothills. Either way, Grand Colombier should remain the main event.
How to Build This Ride
- Start in Culoz for the cleanest version.
- Climb Grand Colombier from the Culoz side.
- Use the summit area as the main objective.
- Decide whether to descend the same way or build a wider loop.
- Return to your base with enough energy for the final valley roads.
Climbs Included
Villages & Coffee Stops
- Culoz is the obvious climb base. Belley gives more room for a larger ride. Plan stops before and after the climb, because the ascent itself should be treated as a long effort.
Make it shorter
Start in Culoz and ride Grand Colombier as a focused climb.
Make it harder
Add the Artemare side on another day, or build a bigger Jura loop if your route planner finds safe connectors.
Local Notes
Grand Colombier can feel deceptively quiet. Do not confuse quiet roads with easy roads. The climb is long and irregular enough to punish impatient riding.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
