Grand Ballon Vosges Ride
A serious Vosges ride built around Grand Ballon from Willer sur Thur, with Col du Haag as the natural extra sting near the top.

- Best Season
- May to October
Grand Ballon is the headline climb of the Vosges. From Willer sur Thur, it gives you a proper mountain effort without the altitude drama of the Alps. The road is long enough to define the day, and the upper sections bring the open Vosges feeling that makes this region so underrated.
This route idea works best when you keep Grand Ballon as the main objective. Add Col du Haag if you want the route to feel closer to a Tour de France style mountain stage, but do not turn the whole ride into a random collection of extra climbs. The Vosges reward clean route design.
How to Build This Ride
- Start in Willer sur Thur, Cernay or Mulhouse.
- Build towards Grand Ballon from the Willer sur Thur side.
- Use the climb as the main effort of the day.
- Add Col du Haag if you want a harder upper section.
- Return by the safest and most logical valley road.
Climbs Included
Villages & Coffee Stops
- Willer sur Thur is the practical climb anchor. Cernay gives good access to the southern Vosges. Mulhouse works better as a larger travel base, but it can add less interesting kilometres before the ride really starts.
Make it shorter
Start close to Willer sur Thur and ride Grand Ballon as the main climb without adding Col du Haag.
Make it harder
Add Ballon d’Alsace or extra Route des Crêtes sections on a longer Vosges weekend rather than forcing everything into one overbuilt day.
Local Notes
The Vosges can feel gentle compared with the Alps, but Grand Ballon is still a real mountain climb. Weather can shift quickly near the top, and the descent can be cooler than expected.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
