Not every great Pyrenean ride needs to be a fight with a legendary col. The road towards Gavarnie is different. It is long, scenic and more gradual, with the landscape doing as much work as the gradient.
This route idea starts in Luz Saint Sauveur and follows the valley towards Gavarnie Gèdre. Stronger riders can extend towards Col des Tentes if conditions and route planning allow it. The result is a ride that feels more like a mountain journey than a pure climbing test.
How to Build This Ride
- Start in Luz Saint Sauveur.
- Ride towards Gavarnie Gèdre.
- Use the long gradual climb as the main structure of the day.
- Extend towards Col des Tentes if you want a harder and higher route.
- Return to Luz Saint Sauveur.
Climbs Included
- Montée de Gavarnie Gèdre
- Col des Tentes and Cirque de Gavarnie
Villages & Coffee Stops
- Luz Saint Sauveur is the best base. Gavarnie works as the scenic destination and possible stop, but always check opening times and seasonality before relying on services.
Make it shorter
Ride only to Gavarnie Gèdre and return.
Make it harder
Extend towards Col des Tentes if road conditions and your legs allow it.
Local Notes
This is a route where scenery can distract from effort. The gradients are not always brutal, but the distance and exposure still count. Bring layers and do not assume the valley weather tells the whole story.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
