Not every Tuscany ride has to be a gravel epic. The Chianti roads are perfect for riders who want rolling terrain, beautiful towns and a route that feels like travel rather than training. The climbs are usually shorter and less famous, but the constant up and down makes the day add up.

This route idea works best as a flexible loop between Siena, Castellina in Chianti, Radda in Chianti and nearby villages. Add gravel only if you want it. The road version already has plenty of character.

How to Build This Ride

  • Start in Siena, Castellina in Chianti or Radda in Chianti.
  • Link hill towns using smaller roads rather than fast main roads.
  • Add optional gravel sectors if your bike and tyres suit them.
  • Plan a proper village stop halfway.
  • Return by a loop that avoids unnecessary busy roads.

Villages & Coffee Stops

  • Castellina in Chianti and Radda in Chianti are natural anchors. Siena works as a stronger city base. The best stops are often simple village bars rather than polished cycling cafés.

Make it shorter

Build a compact loop between two Chianti towns and keep the route mostly on tarmac.

Make it harder

Add gravel sectors or extend towards the Strade Bianche roads south of Siena.

Local Notes

Tuscany looks gentle in photos. On the bike, the constant rolling roads can be tiring. Avoid planning only by kilometres. Elevation and surface matter more.
