Ballon d’Alsace is not the biggest climb in France, but it carries weight. It is a historic road, a clean Vosges objective and a good way to understand the region without immediately building a monster route.

You can ride it from different sides, which makes it useful as a flexible route idea. Start close to the climb if you want a focused day, or use Belfort as a larger base if you want more distance and easier logistics. Either way, keep the route readable. Ballon d’Alsace works best when it is the centrepiece.

  • Choose Saint Maurice sur Moselle, Lepuix or Belfort as your base.
  • Pick the side of Ballon d’Alsace that fits your ride.
  • Use the climb as the main effort.
  • Add a loop through nearby Vosges roads if you want more distance.
  • Return by a route that avoids unnecessary main road exposure.

Villages & Coffee Stops

  • Saint Maurice sur Moselle is the most direct anchor for one side of the climb. Lepuix works for the other. Belfort offers more hotels, food and travel options, but can make the ride less pure.

Make it shorter

Start near the base and ride Ballon d’Alsace as an out and back.

Make it harder

Link Ballon d’Alsace with Grand Ballon over two separate rides, or add surrounding Vosges climbs if your route still flows naturally.

Local Notes

The climb is steady enough for many riders, but the total day can still become demanding. Do not underestimate the extra elevation if you build a loop instead of a simple up and down.
