This is the cleanest way to ride Alpe d’Huez. Start in Bourg d’Oisans, climb the famous twenty one hairpins and decide at the top whether you want to keep the day compact or add extra kilometres around the resort roads.
The route does not need to be complicated. The climb is the story. The first kilometres are steep, the hairpins give the road its rhythm and the final approach into the village feels like riding into cycling history. For a first Alpine trip, this is exactly the kind of route that makes sense.
How to Build This Ride
- Start in Bourg d’Oisans.
- Climb Alpe d’Huez via the classic hairpin road.
- Take time at the top rather than rushing straight back down.
- Add a short loop around the resort if you want more riding.
- Descend carefully back to Bourg d’Oisans.
Climbs Included
Villages & Coffee Stops
- Bourg d’Oisans is the natural start and finish. At the top, Alpe d’Huez has plenty of places to refill, eat or take the obvious photo. The best coffee feeling is usually back in Bourg d’Oisans after the descent.
Make it shorter
Ride only the climb and descend the same way. That keeps the day focused and still gives you the full Alpe d’Huez experience.
Make it harder
Add Col de Sarenne after reaching Alpe d’Huez, or combine the climb with a longer valley ride before returning to Bourg d’Oisans.
Local Notes
Do not attack the first three kilometres. They are some of the hardest on the climb and can ruin the rest of the ride. Start early in summer, especially if it is hot or busy.
This is a flexible ride idea, not a turn-by-turn route. Use the climbs, villages and notes above to build your own GPX in Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS or another planner before you ride.
