Paris earns its place on any cycling bucket list for one image above all others: the final stage of the Tour de France, sprinting down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées beneath the Arc de Triomphe. That finish has anchored the race since 1975.
But Paris is also a genuinely good cycling city in its own right, and has become dramatically more so in recent years — nearing 1,000 km of dedicated cycle paths today, making it realistic to explore almost entirely by bike.
Beyond the historic centre, two large parks bookend the city: the Bois de Vincennes to the east and the Bois de Boulogne to the west, each covering close to 1,000 hectares of parkland, lakes and quiet paths.

Champs-Élysées Finish Loop
Retraces the closing kilometres of the Tour de France's final stage, past the Grand Palais to Pont Alexandre III.
Bois de Vincennes to Bois de Boulogne
A cross-city ride through the Left Bank connecting Paris's two great parks.

Basing yourself centrally, near the Marais or Saint-Germain, keeps you within easy reach of the Champs-Élysées, the Seine riverside paths and both major parks.
Coffee & Culture
Cycling culture in Paris runs through its cafés as much as its roads — a stop for coffee and people-watching along the Seine or in the Marais is as much a part of a Paris cycling day as the riding itself. The 'Paris Respire' initiative closes many neighbourhoods to car traffic on Sundays.
Best Time to Go
April through October gives the most comfortable riding weather and the longest daylight hours. The Tour de France traditionally finishes on the Champs-Élysées in late July.
Practical Tips
- Both CDG and Orly airports connect well to central Paris by train or transfer; factor in transfer time.
- The Vélib' bike-share system offers an easy way to explore without bringing your own bike.
- Weekday mornings and Sunday 'Paris Respire' closures offer the calmest riding conditions.
- If visiting for the Tour de France finish, expect significant road closures around the Champs-Élysées from mid-morning.
