Peñas Blancas is one of the best examples of why Andalusian cycling can be deceptive. You start near the coast, but the climb quickly becomes a real mountain effort. From Estepona, it runs for 16 kilometres and gains 960 metres.
This is a strong route anchor for riders staying on the Costa del Sol. It gives you a clear summit objective without needing to travel deep inland, but the numbers are serious enough that it should not be treated as a casual holiday climb.
How to ride it
Start from Estepona and reach the climb early if the weather is hot.
Ride the first half under control, because 16 kilometres is long enough to punish impatience.
Carry enough water, especially outside cooler months.
Where to stay
Estepona is the best base if Peñas Blancas is your main objective. Marbella and nearby coastal towns can also work, but they add coastal road planning.
Practical tips
The coastal start can hide how hard the climb becomes.
Heat and exposure are major factors.
Plan the return route carefully, especially if starting outside Estepona.
