Observatorio de Calar Alto is one of the hardest climbs in the Vuelta a España 2026 route. From Gérgal, it climbs for 21.2 kilometres and gains more than 1,250 metres. The gradient is steady enough to ride in rhythm, but the total workload is enormous.
This is a proper Andalusian mountain objective. The observatory finish gives the climb a clear destination, while the length makes it a serious test for anyone building a cycling trip around southern Spain.
How to ride it
Start from Gérgal and settle into a sustainable climbing rhythm.
Do not chase the early pace, because the climb is over twenty kilometres long.
Plan water carefully before the ascent.
Where to stay
Gérgal is the direct climb anchor. Almería and nearby towns can work better for wider travel logistics, but they add planning complexity.

This is a big heat management climb in southern Spain.
