The Koppenberg is famous because it is hard in a very specific way. The numbers are already intimidating, with an average gradient of 11.6 percent and a maximum of 22 percent, but the surface is what gives the climb its reputation. It is steep, narrow and unforgiving.
This is not a climb where you can easily correct a mistake. Lose momentum, choose the wrong line or arrive in the wrong gear, and suddenly six hundred metres becomes a long walk with cleats on cobbles. Ride it cleanly and it feels like a small victory over one of cycling’s most stubborn roads.
How to Ride It
- Enter with momentum, but not panic. You need speed, yet you also need control.
- Stay as smooth as possible over the steepest stones. Sudden accelerations can break traction.
- Keep your eyes up. Looking only at the cobbles directly below you makes it harder to choose a stable line.
Where to Stay
Oudenaarde is again the strongest base. It gives you direct access to the Flemish Ardennes and makes it easy to combine the Koppenberg with other iconic bergs in one ride.
Practical Tips
- Avoid wet conditions if you are not comfortable on cobbles. The Koppenberg becomes much more difficult when traction drops.
- Expect other cyclists on good weather days. Give riders ahead of you space, because stopping halfway can cause a chain reaction.
- Practise riding cobbles before tackling it. Fitness helps, but technique matters just as much here.
