The Télégraphe is often discussed as part of the Galibier, which is fair, but slightly unfair. This is a real climb in its own right. From Saint Michel de Maurienne, it rises for 11.8 kilometres at an average of 7.8 percent, which is enough to demand full attention before the higher mountain even begins.
Its role as the gateway gives the climb a particular psychology. Ride it too hard and the Galibier will remember. Ride it too gently and the day can start to feel endless. The art is finding a controlled tempo that respects both the road under your wheels and the mountain still waiting above.
How to Ride It
- Pace it as the first part of something bigger. Even if you only ride Télégraphe, the climb rewards patience.
- Keep the effort steady through the middle kilometres. The gradient is consistent enough to settle into rhythm.
- If you are continuing to Galibier, eat and drink before the summit. The short reset after Télégraphe is not enough to fix a bad fuelling plan.
Where to Stay
Saint Michel de Maurienne is the most direct base. It puts you at the foot of the climb and makes the Télégraphe Galibier combination logistically simple.

- Geneva, Lyon and Grenoble can all work for access to this part of the Alps.
- The climb is often part of bigger Alpine routes, so plan your day around total elevation, not just distance.
- Bring layers if you are continuing higher. Conditions can change dramatically above the Télégraphe.
