The Valloire side of Galibier is the second act after Télégraphe, and that context matters. On paper, 17.7 kilometres at 6.9 percent is already a major climb. After the previous effort, it becomes a proper Alpine examination.
The climb rises into a bigger, harsher landscape as it goes higher. This is where pacing, clothing, fuelling and patience all become part of the same problem. Galibier is not just a famous name. It is a climb that deserves its reputation.
How to Ride It
- Eat and drink before leaving Valloire.
- Start calmly. The upper kilometres are the real test.
- Bring warm kit for the descent from high altitude.
Where to Stay
Valloire works well if this side is the focus. Saint Michel de Maurienne is better if you want the full Télégraphe Galibier sequence.
Practical Tips
- Check pass conditions before planning the ride.
- Weather at the top can be completely different from the valley.
- Do not underestimate the accumulated fatigue from Télégraphe.
