The Galibier from Saint Michel de Maurienne is one of the great Alpine tests because of its scale. The average gradient looks manageable until you remember that the route includes 34.8 kilometres and more than 2,000 metres of elevation gain. This is not a climb to reduce to one number.
The Télégraphe sets the tone, but the Galibier gives the day its identity. After the valley section, the road climbs into a bigger, harsher landscape. The higher you go, the more the climb feels like a proper Tour de France mountain. It is beautiful, serious and completely unforgiving of bad pacing.
How to Ride It
- Ride the Télégraphe with restraint. The Galibier is where the day becomes truly expensive.
- Use the valley section to reset, not to race. Eat, drink and let your breathing settle.
- Keep extra energy for the upper Galibier. Altitude and fatigue make the final kilometres feel much steeper than the average suggests.
Where to Stay
Saint Michel de Maurienne is the cleanest base for this side. It removes unnecessary transfer time and lets you start the climb directly from the valley.
Practical Tips
- Check pass conditions before planning the ride. Galibier is a high mountain road and seasonal access matters.
- Carry warm kit for the descent. Even in summer, the summit can feel cold.
- Respect the total workload. This is not just a climb, it is a full mountain day.
