Col d’Èze

Col d’Èze is the classic climb out of Nice. It is close to the sea, close to the city and just hard enough to remind you that the Côte d’Azur is not only about café stops and coastal roads.

Col d’Èze is one of the most accessible climbs on the French Riviera. From Nice, the road starts almost straight out of city life and gradually pulls you above the coast. That contrast is part of the appeal. One moment you are riding past apartments, scooters and seafront energy. Not long after, the view opens up and the Mediterranean starts to sit below you.

The climb is not brutally steep, but it has enough length and gradient to make it a real effort. It suits riders who like rhythm more than survival. You can ride it as a steady morning climb, use it as part of a longer loop into the hills above Nice or test yourself properly if the legs are good.

How to Ride It

  • Use the first kilometres to settle in. The climb starts close to town, so it is easy to arrive at the bottom already distracted or slightly rushed.
  • Keep the effort smooth through the middle section. The gradient is manageable, but pushing too hard early will make the top feel slower.
  • Look up when the road opens. The views are part of the reason to ride here, not just a reward at the summit.

Where to Stay

Nice is the obvious base. You can ride to Col d’Èze directly from the city, while still having access to the coast, the old town, bike rental options and longer inland routes. For a first cycling trip to the Côte d’Azur, it keeps the logistics simple.

Practical Tips

  • Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is very close to the city, which makes this one of the easiest European cycling bases to reach.
  • Traffic can be part of the experience near Nice. Start early for a calmer ride.
  • Bring water before you leave the city. The climb is not remote, but you should not treat it like a casual commute.
