Col de Sarenne
Col de Sarenne is the quieter, sharper route into the Alpe d’Huez story. From the southeastern flank, it gives the final weekend of the Tour de France 2026 a different kind of Alpine drama.

Col de Sarenne is not as famous as the twenty one hairpins of Alpe d’Huez, but that makes it more interesting. At 12.8 kilometres and 7.3 percent average, it is hard enough to stand alone as a major climb.
Its value in the Tour de France 2026 cluster is strategic and narrative. It gives the Alpe d’Huez finale a second personality: less iconic, more rugged, and still very demanding. For riders, it is a way to experience the area beyond the postcard version.
How to Ride It
- Start conservatively. The climb is long and steep enough to punish impatience.
- Keep focus on the rougher or more exposed sections.
- Save energy if the ride continues towards Alpe d’Huez.
Where to Stay
Bourg d’Oisans is still the best overall base. It gives access to Alpe d’Huez, Sarenne and the surrounding Alpine network.
Practical Tips
- Check road surface and weather before riding.
- Bring layers for the descent.
- Combine Sarenne with Alpe d’Huez only if you are ready for a very serious day.
