Col de Montségur has a clean, serious profile. At 6.9 kilometres and 6.9 percent average, the numbers are easy to remember and hard enough to respect. It is not a giant, but it is a proper climb.
The road from Bélesta gives the climb a strong regional feel. This is the Pyrenees away from the biggest Tour de France icons, where the gradients are still demanding and the scenery carries much of the reward. It adds depth to the Cyclingtrippers Pyrenees library.
How to Ride It
- Settle early. The gradient is consistent enough to ride at tempo.
- Avoid big surges. Nearly seven percent for nearly seven kilometres is still a real effort.
- Save a little for the upper part, especially if it comes after Col de Coudons.
Where to Stay
Foix is the natural base for this climb cluster. It gives access to Montségur, Coudons and a wider network of Pyrenean roads.
Practical Tips
- Check weather before riding. Smaller Pyrenean roads can feel very different in rain.
- Bring enough water from the valley.
- Pair it with nearby climbs for a strong Stage 4 inspired route.
- Stage 6 · Pau to Gavarnie Gèdre
