Blockhaus is one of the hardest climbs in the Giro d’Italia 2026 route. The numbers are simple and nasty: 18 kilometres, 1,458 metres of elevation gain and an average gradient of 8.1 percent. That is not a climb you add casually to a route. That is the route.

From the Roccamorice and Roccaraso side, Blockhaus gives riders the kind of mountain effort that defines a whole day. It is long enough to require patience and steep enough that poor pacing becomes expensive quickly.

How to ride it

Start with restraint. The average gradient is already high, and the climb is long.

Use very light gearing and avoid trying to hold race pace early.

Plan food, water and clothing before committing to the climb.

Where to stay

Roccamorice and Roccaraso make sense if you want to stay close to the climb. For a broader Abruzzo trip, use a nearby town with better services and build Blockhaus as the main objective.

Practical tips

Treat Blockhaus as a full mountain day, not a side quest.

Weather and temperature can shift as you climb higher.

Check road access and descent options before finalising your route.
